I was still in my 20s and engaged to my boyfriend when my new doctor asked him to leave the room so he could discuss with me my diagnosis in private. This is very rare and you are very sick. he said. I nodded that I understood. There is a treatment he continued but I dont know if it will help you or not. I have only treated one other patient with your primary immune deficiency disease. I asked what happened to this patient and if I could be put into contact with him, but my doctor shook his head. I treated him with IVIG for a while, even higher & higher doses but he isnt doing well and probably will not survive. At this point I should have been scared but I was not. After all I had been through the most important thing to me now was that I had a diagnosis, a reason that could explain all my severe illnesses. And there was a treatment! Something I could try that may save my life.. That was nearly 20 years ago. In these years I have married & grown up with my husband. I also got to see my stepson grow up and we are now proud grandparents! I do lots of volunteer & advocacy work with animals and with other rare disease patients. Ive been able to help take care of my mom. I am active in my community. Ive experienced & learned so much. There is no way to sum it all up except to say I owe it all to those amazing donors who make the treatment for my disease possible. Without plasma donations my life would have likely ended before my marriage even began. Blood donations save countless lives whether its needed for an illness, an emergency or even to manage a chronic condition like mine. You may not get to know those you save or all the things they get to do because of your selfless gift, but know you are making a real difference in the world by making life a possibility for someone in need. #blood4What
