I was struggling in my rowboat on the Pacific in January 2008. The La Nina conditions which developed after my launch had brought persisten southeast winds driving me west and blocking my way into the southern hemisphere. I experienced the same problems on the Bismarck Sea in January 2009, and on the Coral Sea in January 2010. I have been observing the winds on my route for sometime now. Had I been rowing at those locations this year, the seasonal northwest monsoons would have easily helped me make progress due south or southeast, staying on my planned route. The red line shows my realized course on Google Earth. The winds indicated nowadays at a comparable location by earth.nullschool.net/ show that I had planned my route just fine, but did not have the requisite luck with cyclical climate patterns. Erden.
