I was surfing around on Youtube this afternoon, and came across this wonderful song of John Denvers. I simply cannot express what this music means to me - both from the past, and for the message it has for us now, nearly 40 years down the track, when the spirit of Calypso is more important than ever. One day Ill find the words to write about the days we spent on Waiheke Island, lazing about in the sun or wandering along the shores and walking in the bush - back in the morning of the world, when life could still surprise us, and there really were places wher you could find a clear crystal ocean. Calypso was our background music, when we still hoped to avert the damage we were doing to the world - when the damage weve achieved now was impossible to envisage. Ill write of the tinny sound of a transistor radio, playing Calypso as the ferry - that amazingly decrepit old ferry - pulled into Matiatia wharf, and all the week stretched out before us, with nothing to do but enjoy the crazy time-warp that was Waiheke Island before it became fashionable, and the developers took it away from us. Of warm sand between my toes, and children running about naked ofon the clean grass, sunshine and swimming and foraging for shellfish - still safe to take from that water in those days - of wind sighing through the branches of pine trees on long candlelit evenings spent laughing and talking, drin ing and eating - and planning how to put the world right. One day I will. When I can listen to this song without having to wipe my eyes and tell myself not to be such a sentimental old fool.. .https://youtube/watch?v=35x_rwyBh-8
