I was surprised that my remark on this wall about biased commentating got such a publicity. I am afraid that many of those who decided to attack me for that, did not read properly an initial post, which says : You can be a good commentator, even a very popular one, but you are not expected to express your utter happiness, when your compatriot and long-time rival loses a game. Thats just disgusting. Now, my question to all of you - is one really expected to express his/her utter happiness as described above? I dont think many of you would support this claim. Lets pass to the London story. First of all, did I call Nigels commentary disgusting? If you claim so, then you accept that he was expressing his utter happiness indeed! Actually, for some reason, nearly everybody understood who are we talking about. Now we may argue, whether Nigel Short is biased against Michael Adams (I believe he is , and you can find the traces of that even in his own interviews, as brought by GM Mikhail Golubev - such sort of rivalry is nothing new between the top players from the same country, just there is no place for it in commentary booth), we can argue whether commentator should be fun to the extent of his excited commentary including something like Come on, resign! and laughing loudly and repeatedly when someone is losing (suggesting that Nigel was not happy at all, but just overexcited), we can try hard and think about another top commentator who would act the same way, clearly enjoying himself and the very moment, and yes, I am ready not to argue with English natives, who claim, that disgusting is too strong a word here (maybe distasteful would be better), What does amaze me, though, that Nigel attributes my remarks to some sort of revenge, following his comments on the Fellers case. It is such a futile accusation, that it has literally left me speechless when I read about it yesterday. What should I be taking revenge for? For some discussion, where we disagreed? For Nigels proposal to alternate the medal winners of the Olympiad retrospectively, which simply cant be done in Swiss System tournament (and it is no wonder, that this proposal was not supported by anyone even in the comments) ? Still puzzled...
