I was taken to a meeting today with a high-ranking education official from the government. I was surprised that I was told to dress more casual for the event, as people only wear ties to formal events here. Nobody wears a tie to work each day. When I met her, there was an exchange of gifts and then we sat down while she went through a complex tea-making ritual. The tea we drank was from leaves that had been aged ten years and were from a 600 year old tree. The gift she gave me was a tin of this highly-coveted tea. We had a great chat (through a translator) and are both optimistic about the school.
