I was talking to a gentlemen this evening, a very nice gentlemen - TopicsExpress

I was talking to a gentlemen this evening, a very nice gentlemen about my relatively recent move into Decatur and the positives of having excellent restaurants, bars, public transportation, culture and art in town. This lead to a conversation about MARTA and he told me that he is absolutely against the rail coming to his part of town because of the increased crime. I responded I live less than 2 minutes from a MARTA station where there is virtually no crime in my neighborhood. But even so, he was adamantly against the addition of MARTA coming to his part of town. (it should be noted that MARTA has plans to expand into this area--whcih he was unaware of). I understand people want to protect their kids and dont want crime, but this kind of thinking is old and regressive. I just couldnt believe with all the progress that has been made in in-town neighborhoods that this kind of thinking still exists. It holds us back from becoming a 1st class world city, hinders economic, artistic and business progress, and makes the traffic continue to get worse. Why do we continue to punish ourselves like this? People are not riding MARTA to anyones neighborhood, getting off the train and stealing your big screen TV then getting back on the train and riding back downtown with TV in tote. Atlanta is a great city, but it could be an even greater more enriching place to live if we could just open our eyes and minds and help to progress this already fairly progressive city. Otherwise, we will stifle its growth, and we will always be known as that city with bad traffic. Get on the boat or drown yall!
