I was talking to a writer friend awhile back about how the internet has made cute hyperbole (WORST THING EVER, EPIC. etc.) not only commonplace, but expected in communication. She said this was troublesome, because now what do we say with something really is truly heinous or truly awesome. I said I didnt think it was a problem and language evolves, but I find Im having a hard time describing the events happening around power and race in the US right now. Terrible. Tragic. Disgusting. Evil. All of these words have been kawaii-fied by BuzzFeed and social media (both of which Ive contributed to). What can we say about something this bad? I want to know how to talk about this in words that communicate that this is real life.
