I was taught last summer by a friend of mine in Winnipeg, Canada. Now that i live out in Rural Manitoba i have started collecting material all around me. When the rain and floods came this past week our little town of Pierson became an island for just over a week. No roads in or out. We joined together to save our town but by the end of the week there wasnt much to do as we waited for the water to go down, so... I finished my second basket ever! Im calling it Floodwater. I made it during the flood. The purple reeds came from across from the Pierson welcome sign. The Birch was blown out of Auntie Joyces tree during the rain and wind, and all the material was soaked in floodwater. The handle and rim were roots from a tree we took out earlier this summer. Im am hooked. The sculptural possibilities are endless. And sitting there with the material and connecting to the places and plants around you is so meaningful. Where do you get your material from? The stuff you dont collect yourself.
