I was thinking . . . It’s so strange. It’s not what you would expect. In fact, it’s the opposite. I read about it this morning. A guy named Matthew described it. And it’s stunning. Shocking. The intensity and the severity are not what you would expect from one who was supposed to be meek and mild. But there it was in black and white. Or red, depending on your version. It was yet another debate/confrontation/incident between the religious folks and Him. You might call them the “church people” of their day. They went to church all the time, knew all the church rules, and looked down on those who didn’t. I know He loved them, but He didn’t seem to like them very much. I suppose it’s because they knew better. They had no excuse. They knew the right way to live. They knew what God desired. They had all they needed physically, socially, economically. And yet, according to Him, they were egotistical, prideful, hypocritical, legalistic, greedy, self-indulgent, blind, wicked, and sinful. Ouch. They pranced around seeking to impress everyone with their outward piety, looking down on those who weren’t as religious as they, and He didn’t like it. Not one bit. So what did He do? He called a spade a spade. He confronted their hypocrisy and then hung out with those who didn’t know better, who didn’t know the way, and who knew they hadn’t arrived but had begun to want to. He went to their homes, sat at their tables, and shared their meals. He healed their sick and loved their lost and enjoyed their company. He loved them where they were and shared a better way. I wish I was more like Him.
