I was thinking . . . They left last week. Again. And now it’s late Friday afternoon. I did all the work I plan to do for the day. And so I went upstairs to straighten their empty rooms. There’s clutter everywhere. I picked up the trash, straightened the bedspreads, saw the results of their summer back home. And then I got nostalgic. Sad even. Because they’re gone. Our twin boys went back to college – separate colleges - for another year. I don’t begrudge them. It’s supposed to be this way. They should go and grow and make new friends and dream new dreams. They should take all that we gave them and find out who they are and who they’re going to be. If they didn’t go and do and become, I would feel like a failure. I would tell them to go. So it’s right they left again. But I can still be sad. On occasion. Not for long and not in a depressed kind of way. But in a I-can’t-believe-it’s-over kind of way. And they are over. Those growing up years have passed. They were good and fun. We watched them grow. We taught them the best we could. We loved them and invested in them. Spent endless time and energy and money. On them. And now we continue to watch. Just from farther away. Oh, we talk and text. They still need us, just not as much. We love that they love their schools and their new lives. We’ll go see them this fall. On the weekends at ball games for one. For plays and musicals for the other. We’ll take them out to eat. Which they seem to like. And we’ll catch up and try not to be too nosey. But we want to know. We want to know everything. What they’re doing and what they’re learning and who they’re meeting and how they are. We just want to know. Because we remember. We remember when they learned to walk and when they played baseball and when we were all on vacation together. We remember the night of the big game and the days of long track meets. We remember the friends and the laughter and the first cars. We remember it all. And that’s why we want to know. And that’s what I’m thinking on this Friday afternoon.
