I was thinking about weight loss the other day, just as I do just about every day, and it got me thinking about how most people view the act of weight loss in a negative light. Lets play a little word association game. When I say a word, you say the very first thing thatcomes to mind. • diet • scale • legs • fat • weight If youre like most people, you have negative associations with one or all of these words. A lifetime of negative experiences with weight loss has forever etched into your brain that losing weight equals being miserable in the process. Bland food. Hunger. Exhaustion from all the exercise. Frustration from the weight not coming off fast enough or not at all. Why wouldnt you have a negative association with it? Heres the thing though: losing weight and getting fit and healthy should be fun and enjoyable. Even if you dont lose a single pound this week or the next, you should still enjoy everything youre doing. Why? Because if you dont, youre never going to stick with it for the long term. And thats where success comes from - long-term adherence to healthy eating and an active lifestyle. If you do that long enough, you will be healthier, happier, fitter, and as a side effect of all that - you will lose weight. If youre not enjoying the lifestyle change youre undergoing, take a step back, take a deep breath, and try to see the bigger picture. • You CAN enjoy your favorite foods in moderation. • You CAN make positive changes to your health and fitness even if the scale doesnt budge. • You CAN lose weight at a slower pace and still be satisfied (a 1/2 lb per week for a year is still 26 lbs) • You CAN get through a day without being hungry if you dont cut your calories so much and take your time. • You CAN achieve your weight loss goals and be happy during the process that gets you there. Remember, every positive action you take, whether you lose weight or not, is changing your body from the inside out. You might not be able to see it yet, but you will in time. Smile and take it one day at a time.
