I was thinking of changing my Martial Art by trying to go to some - TopicsExpress

I was thinking of changing my Martial Art by trying to go to some MMA classes in order to see if its right for me and if not to at least give me an idea where my strengths and interests lie. I have a few questions I was hoping yall could give me some insight on: (1) How Important is it to have decent credentials for an instructor? e.g. Does a national champion in his style make him a good instructor (in terms of explaining the technical aspects of a move and having the patience to explain it in detail to a beginner and is this neccessary?) (2) Would a successful, competitive and skilled gym attract a certain type of individual causing a large percentage of its members to be sadists or people who enjoy inflicting injuries on others? e.g. 40% (sorry if this is an offensive question but it is a legitimate concern of mine perhaps born of ignorance.) (3) If I am unable to learn or progress through my current martial art due to either incompetence or incompatibility with a method of training, does mean I need to change instructor or a martial art altogether? (I am failing to execute all my techniques and applying the theory behind each one after a 2 month break) Ive been doing for Wing Chun for about 4.5 years and Ive come back from a break from it for 2 months to find that Im incapable of performing a single technique in a light contact sparring/chi sao under heavy pressure (hit softly but going fast and not withholding blows) against someone who has done around a year or 2. I find that doing forms disagrees with me and that it would be much easier to hit pads or something of the sort and get the instant gratification of feeling the power behind each technique. I feel that the concept of torque might be easier to apply for me than the centreline concept since I can understand how it can be applied. I feel as if I am unable to defend myself in a self defense situation where I cannot run (setting example: an elevator) The brazilian training academy seems much more convenient for me locationwise with a more friendly feel but Auckland MMA seems more talented but not sure the training environment would be too brutal for an uncoordinated person such as myself. btacademy.co.nz/class-schedule/ aucklandmma.co.nz/class-schedule/
