I was thinking, today, about a story I heard years ago as a child. It involved an elderly man, his son, and his grandson. Id like to share it with you. The elderly man lived wit his son and grandson. The Elderly man was having some control issues - he had trouble drinking coffee without dribbling, dropping his dishes only to see food and broken China all over the floor. His son was beside himself with anger, even though his father had a physical handicap. The son bought some sheet metal, made two dishes and a cup, and had his father eat in a separate room by himself, especially if there was company. One Saturday afternoon, the son went into the garage, and saw the grandchild working with sheet metal. Intrigued, the son said to the grandchild, Hey, champ! I see youve taken an interest in working with sheet metal! I really think thats Great! What are you making? Innocently, the grandson looked up and said, Im making two plates and a cup for you so that theyll be ready for you when you get like grandpa. The son was taken back. He went into his bedroom and locked the door. He spent the better part of an hour sobbing through the shame he felt by what hed done to his own father. When he composed himself and went to his father, who forgave him with open arms. From that day forward, the elderly gentleman sat at his place at the table with everybody, and ate from the same China that the rest of the family ate from. There is a sermon in this story . . . You may be on top of the world - a great physical specimen and have all the charm of Emily Post. But one day, youll be like that elderly gentleman. How would YOU want to be treated? I thought about this story tonight because of a kindness that 2 young boys did for me not 2 hours ago. I needed some MDF to finish some garage cabinets, and a couple of 10 ft 2x4s. If youve ever had to lift MDF, its pretty heavy stuff. They never asked IF they could load it, they asked HOW I wanted it loaded. Next time you see an elderly person, show them a kindness. Thats one small way to help change an evil world. God Bless you all.
