I was to have landed in Paris on Sunday morning for a quick getaway--a few museums, time alone with my spouse, strolling the streets. With 88 thousand police and soldiers on alert, if I got the news right, and a rally of one hundred thousand expected in the center of Paris on Sunday, weve decided to postpone our trip. Had I no dependents, I might have chosen to go anyway. In any case, my heart goes out to the families of the victims as well as to those French Muslims and north African French living in south--including a few we know well and cherish--whose lives will not be made easier by this atrocity. Even with my poor French and my cultural ignorance, I have been startled to observe certain well-educated French neighbors of ours who refuse to come and sit at our cafe table if we have already invited our friend Tariq to join us for a glass of rose or a cup of horrible instant coffee. Yet--Je Suis Ahmed--its the popular Parisian twitter in honor of the slain Muslim French gendarme who was among the slaughtered--there is hope.
