I was told that over 1,000 people showed up last Sunday at Garfield High School to support the annual Akron Pee Wee Cheerleading Competition and paid $5.00 admission. Thats roughly $5,000 total which was collected! And, couldve been even more if the organizers learned to seek out sponsors in the future. While I believe in supporting children in their activities, my point is think about what the outcome could be if 1,000 people - 1,000 registered voters - 1,000 (or more) concerned citizens were to fill Akron City & Summit County Council Chambers demanding that the city/county begin to do something to improve the infrastructure of Akrons black communities? Like one of my friends says: Black neighborhoods in West Akron, East Akron, North Akron and South Akron deserve the SAME financial shot in the arm as Highland Square, Downtown, Firestone Park and other privileged areas. It shows where our priorities are...we place more interest in showing up at a little league event than we do at the doorsteps of city & county council to fight for our fair share of taxpayers money to improve our own neighborhoods. (smh). God help us! Will people EVER wake up and grow a spine? Surviving by a complacent, existing mentality is not the same as living progressively.
