I was totally moved by watching this documentary on Roger Ebert - TopicsExpress

I was totally moved by watching this documentary on Roger Ebert last night on CNN. Directed by the great Steve James. I have had three personal contacts with Ebert. When Jessica Klonsky was a young kid, we invited friends of hers over to watch 16mm movies in the basement for her birthday. She invited Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert to join us. We never heard from Siskel. But Ebert wrote Jessica a letter expressing his apologies for not coming and wishing her the best on her birthday. A letter we still have. I took two classes with Ebert at a University of Chicago extension. One on classic post-war cinema and one on silent films. He was quite the character and teacher and the classes were memorable. If you missed the doc, see it when it shows up again. Not to be missed. Like Mike Royko, Nelson Algren, Tim Black, Studs Terkel, Eddie Balchowsky and Harold Washington, Ebert was part of Chicagos DNA.
