I was up with Ornithological Society volunteers in the Silver - TopicsExpress

I was up with Ornithological Society volunteers in the Silver Peaks today, doing more bird counts, on both DOC and City Forests land. We were lucky enough to hear and see some of our beautiful, cheeky wee robin, as well as an abundance of riflemen, tomtits, brown creeper, bellbirds and fantails. That robin populations are still hanging in parts of City Forests blocks, despite predation pressure, is nothing short of a miracle! The clematis was in flower and the views down towards Porteous Hill, Blueskin Bay, and inland, were just stunning. I was reminded how lucky we are to have such special walks within just half an hours drive of the city - and thanks to our ownership of City Forests, access to them is fairly uncomplicated. I reflected often, today, on the asset that is City Forests: not just a source dividends for Council (offsetting rates), but an entity responsible for some very special ecological and recreational assets. Long may it be recognised as such.
