I was very moved by everyone that showed up at City Hall to fight for shared values of equity in the city budget. It was disheartening that a hundred feet away in a room behind the Council Chambers, the Park Board voted on our budget and cut more than $500,000 in funding diverse neighborhood parks in 2015, reduced rec center staff by thousands of hours off of the heels of our last meeting where the board rejected funding a racial impact audit of our employment practices and refused to overturn exclusionary gender identity practices. I hope I can do a better job in 2015 in working with our allies to harness the incredibly community power I saw at City Hall tonight to continue to work for progressive changes at the Park Board.
