I was very pleased to take note of heritage grant funding for St Catherine’s Anglican Church in Greenough and Walkaways Belay Farm Group. St Catherine’s will receive a heritage grant of $34,070 for repairs to rendering, cracked walls and the installation of a damp course, while Belay Farm receives a grant of $8,500 for re-roofing, repairing joinery and repairing the cracked walls of the 1882 two-storey stone mill. Belay Farm is also associated with the settlement of the Greenough district and remains one of the few early farm complexes where the majority of buildings are intact and still used today. Built in 1858 by former stonemason John Jones, it was farmed by three generations of his family before being purchased by its current owners Robert and Norma Martin in 1971. The Martins have spent considerable time and their own resources to ensure that this significant pioneering property continues to thrive and be a vital part of our heritage. St Catherine’s Anglican Church is an integral component of the Historic Greenough Hamlet, which is a popular tourist destination. The conservation work will ensure the church remains an integral part of the local community for future generations, just as it has since its construction in 1914.
