I was very privileged a couple of weeks ago to see one of the most sensational performances Im ever likely to witness when I watched Kevin Spacey as the famous trial lawyer Clarence Darrow at The Old Vic. Spaceys outstanding performance and the wonderful eloquence of Darrows speeches prompted me to seek out a biography of the subject and I have just finished reading The Old Devil by Donald McRae. The book itself has its weaknesses but I cant recommend it highly enough if youre a lover of great oratory. Much of Darrows courtroom arguments and closing summaries are included within and they are well worth reading. Here was an elderly man (particularly by standards a century ago) who held judge, juries and courtrooms captivated for 7 hour stretches with beautifully crafted arguments that pulled at the heartstrings. Worth reading and guaranteed to inspire.
