I was very surprised that this can affect us in our 40s !? Most of us will have seen the how you spot symptoms of a STROKE advert on TV recently. With me being within touching distance of 41 years young this week (all birthday gifts accepted) I was very surprised to learn it can affect many people in their 40s, as I always presumed it was only the older population. As a good number of my friends are now in their 40s /prime !! :-) I wanted to share these facts with you:-.... A STROKE is reportedly the 3rd most common cause of death in the UK. It affects many people in their 40s & 50s, as well as those who are older. A stroke is similar to a heart attack expect that the brain is the target organ. The arteries carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain become impeded causing arterial narrowing and the risk of blockage. If the brain is starved of oxygen for more than a couple of minutes corresponding brain damage will inevitably occur. The effects can range in severity from the inability to move a limb, total paralysis to one side of the body or even immediate death. The stimulation factors are many - genetic, diet, overweight or obese, high blood pressure, raised HDL cholesterol, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, the ageing process. Nutritional approaches for avoiding a stroke include a diet low in saturated fats, regular oily fish to reduce the accumulative of arterial cholesterol, a high intake of fibre. Vitamin E is essential to reduce platelet aggregation and lower blood pressure as well as neutralising free radical damage. Without trying to scare everyone I just hope this info helps and educates as I certainly learnt something new. AJ Source of info :- Ian Marber Dip ION Vicki Edgson Dip ION
