I was very upset when I saw this sensationalist post, making the Swiss look like pet-slaugtering and consuming savages! While in fact, Switzerland is one of the most humane societies, animals included. Even massive islamic and jewish lobbying to allow kosher killings of animals never succeeded. Truth is though, the laws paragraphs allow for loop-holes: the killing of cats and dogs is only illegal, when the killing itself is cruel. The sale of cat and dog meat is illegal, but someone using it for personal consumption may not be criminalized. During and immediately after WWII, which ended in 1945, Switzerland was a poor country. Many people went hungry. Any form of protein was welcome and there was not much fuss with the law. The subject of this post concerns a petition now underway to change this old law, which I am sure will be accepted and the law adjusted to our 21st-century humane society.
