I was walking into the parking garage downtown tonight and saw a homeless man all in veteran gear laying by the door that leads to the upper levels. I politely said to him hey brother, this isnt good real estate to sleep, lots of people come through here. He looked up to me and opened his hand and he had a dead mouse in his palm. I tried to save him... he said, but his leg was broken. I gave him water and food but he wouldnt eat it. He just died... He closed his hand, sunk his head down, and cradled the dead mouse like soothing a baby. I put my food, which I had just purchased moments ago, down by his jacket he was using for a mattress and put a twenty inside the bag. I didnt do it because I felt bad for him. I did it because even though hes as far down the road of luck as you can go he had more empathy for a mouse than I see 90% of the world. Thats worth a free meal and some pocket change.
