I was watching DR WHO today (a well known British Sci-Fi tv show). In the episode he comes face to face with Satan. This Satan is chained in a pit the entire episode except that he is able to still influence, and in some cases control, the minds of those who come within the gravitational pull of his prison. The DR starts telling Satan all the logical and scientific reasons he cant possibly exist, except as a superstitious idea. Satan then quips back in an amused tone, Is that YOUR religion. Satan then goes on to assert how each of those standing before him will die. And a few standing there do, especially those to whom Satan incessantly recounts their past sins. However, the good DR defeats THIS Satan by believing MORE in the one whom he loves most. That ends up being a pretty good plan. Satan is defeated, his plans frustrated and they escape. The only thing the DR had to do was to accept the actuality of this enemy. If he had let his religion, which in his case was his reliance on logic and rationality, control his actions, he would never have found the faith, working through love, to defeat a very real threat, a threat who was chained but still very dangerous. Bottom line, religion doesnt defeat Satan, whether its the faithless religion of the Sadducees or the faithless religion of science. Just the love of Jesus!
