I was watching a Taylor Swift concert this morning as part of a news special (idk?) and I discovered something. This young woman was singing her heart out and moving around the stage in heels effortlessly with a full band behind her and back up singers. You would think that the crowds would have been bursting with energy but most of them weren’t. In fact, to my astonishment, I saw in the crowds of New York Square what I see in some churches, people staring and glaring. Smh. Now, I am no Taylor Swift fan, in fact never even heard of her before I saw this news special but the girl is gifted. She has a beautiful voice and her makeup was flawlessly done. I give her props, the girl had it going on and I aint’ mad at her. Her God given gift is to sing and that is what she is doing…now whether she glorifies Him with her gift or not is between her and her God but I do admire her gift. But what shook me is that with all the effort she and everyone else put into providing a live concert at 8 o’clock in the morning, the least one could do was cheer her on, clap their hands, or wave – do something! Those folks stood there with cameras rolling while others appeared to be just dumbstruck. People do the same thing in church. Watch the worship leaders sing their hearts out, watch the band play, and watch others get their praise on and stand in the crowd looking like a deer in headlights. They can tell you everything that moved, everything that was said but if you ask them if they experienced Jesus at all, the answer is, “No.” Jesus was telling the Pharisees that their hearts were like children throwing temper tantrums. Matt. 11:17, “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance”. In other words, they were so bitter and calloused in heart that nothing moved them at all. Worship used to be about pursuing the presence of God, basking in it, and extracting everything you need from the spirit realm during the time that the Heavens are open. Nowadays, folk will look at you like you are crazy, resist every nudge of Holy Spirit to let go and let God, carry their demons back home with them, and wonder why there is no change in their life. Whose fault is that? I learned something today from watching that concert because a wise man can learn from anything and anybody, even if it’s what NOT to do. Taylor Swift did her thing, it wasn’t raunchy but very tasteful for a pop star but I marveled that I saw the same spirit at work, “Entertain me while I stare at you.”
