I was wondering if anyone might have some suggestions. My Tonks - TopicsExpress

I was wondering if anyone might have some suggestions. My Tonks are both the most lovable creatures alive. They love to sit on your chest and get love and kisses be petted (Ok, you ask what is your complaint?). Especially the larger Tonk Rumi who is closer to 9 lbs has a habit of taking a flying leap and landing on your chest when you are sitting on the couch watching TV out of the middle of nowhere KERPLUNK, no matter if you have a drink in your hands or a plate of food. He thinks he should be right in the middle. He will jump right over the back of the couch. Right on your boobs (ouch!). Sometime without meaning to they will scratch you landing on your arm, even if his nails are freshly cut. We have tried NO, putting him down. He is too quick to put your arms out to stop him. Karma (6 lbs) is more dainty and tends to crawl up to your chest without the THROUGH THE AIR flying leap. My boyfriend who loves the cats feels this is bad behavior (like a dog that jumps on you and sniffs your crotch when you enter the house). He wants me to try and discourage Rumi flying leaps on your chest. I admit it IS very disconcerting even when you LOVE your baby. They both will jump on peoples backs (which we know is a Tonk trait and hang on for dear life with their claws till they ride your shoulder. They will do this to any stranger who comes in the house. He is only 8 mo old (Rumi not my boyfriend 8-) ha ha ha) and I realize he is still an adolescent. He is an extremely smart cat. Looks you straight in the eyes and will do anything for a piece of dried chicken. We are starting to teach the cats to sit still for just a few seconds to get the chicken. Its amazing how quick they caught on. We were thinking they both would make great therapy cats. But they must be able to be a little more controlled and less exuberant. Any training suggestions? I need to start while they are young. I KNOW they are smart enough to be well behaved and could be awesome therapy cats who could walk on a leash. You should see their little faces when they get their cheeks and ears petted. They think they are in heaven and the center of the universe.... (and of course they are). What can I do to get Rumi to walk up like a little gentleman before he wants to sit on your chest instead of dive bombing his way in?
