I was wondering why we find it s difficult to devote our lives to helping out others. I think its because we misunderstand what it means. There is a perception that helping others means becoming like Mother Theresa - that we must give up every comfort, our friends, our family and devote ourselves entirely to the needs of others. We worry that we would get lost and that none of our own needs would be met. In fact we may not even feel that we have the right to have any needs. But this isnt how I understand devoting our lives to others. I see it that we ought to strive to leave every encounter with the other person feeling happier than they were. Whether we gave them comfort, reassurance, perhaps a hug. Maybe we smiled at them or gave them our last change. Perhaps we shared a laugh or maybe we gave up a cherished possession for them. The act can be huge or small. Its all about making someone else feel equal to us not about how much we can give up. xxx
