I watched “From Paris with Love,” and was shocked at how crappy it wasn’t. I’ve got to tell you, I had virtually no interest in this one when it came out in theaters, and only watched it because there wasn’t really anything else that tripped my trigger. It was actually very good. John Travolta is one seriously hit-or-miss A-lister. He usually overacts in action films, and is usually very subtle in dramas, but he was firing on all cylinders in “Paris.” Both he and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers were completely believable as old & new operatives looking at the same situation from very different perspectives. They clicked from their first scene together, and their chemistry energized the entire film. The direction was very good, with my only complaint being the heavily-cut fight/action sequences, which always gives me headaches. Aside from that, the only other thing I didn’t like was the overly sappy (and completely unsurprising) end to the big climax. Still, it worked, but I would have done that part of the movie differently. A huge surprise to me, this one was a pretty good way to spend an hour-and-a-half of my life. $3 06/27/10
