I watched GI Joe 2 last night, and, not that I was expecting it to - TopicsExpress

I watched GI Joe 2 last night, and, not that I was expecting it to be great or anything, but it just seemed to disappoint. Its like the actors showed up and did their acting thing, the SFX people did their add explosion thing, and the Foley people did their swords clashing sound thing. All are excellent at what they do, but I just wasnt invested. It was The Rock being The Rock, Bruce Willis acted like Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum did his thing for about 20 minutes. It took me a second to recognize Adrianne Palicki, which was actually a nice revelation. I know a ton of actors, and I wish we could see new faces in these movies. I realize casting is about box office draw, and getting recognizable talent, and putting TV actors in low-budget movies to see if they can carry it, but there are so many talented actors that it seems like casting directors could spread the roles around. Sometimes its too hard for me to pay attention to the story when Ive seen the actor in 18 other movies, basically doing the same thing already. The Rock is extremely charismatic, and hed probably be the coolest person in the world to hang out with, but in his movies, it feels like -- this time The Rock is funny. Then The Rock is angry. Or The Rock wears a dress. Maybe in another movie The Rock shows another side of The Rock. Channing Tatum as well - hes probably a really cool guy to hang out with, but every time I see him on screen, it feels like Ive already seen the movie. Maybe we need less star-power and more acting. Less acting like a version of themselves. Maybe Im way off. Maybe its just early and I need caffeine. I also officially didnt care about the movie once the UN asked the main villain what he wanted and he said, I want it all. Can you be more specific? How does destroying 7 major cities help you? Overall, I was looking forward to watching it, but it just didnt deliver for me. Right now Im trying to remember the last really good movie I saw. I asked Jayne Elliott, and three movies in the last several years that we came up with almost immediately were 1) The Vow (ironically, with Channing Tatum), 2) We Bought a Zoo, and 3) The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Im not kidding; I know it didnt get great reviews). Each one of these stories had enough setup or backstory that you can get to know and care about the characters. You see the happy couple in The Vow getting married, and so you want them to get that back. You dont see the deceased wife in Zoo, but you see her impact enough that you really care about her family and you want them to be okay. In Wonderstone, you see Steve Carells character getting picked on as a kid, and you see his first magic trick that changes his life - it gives a little boy confidence. You also see his friendship with Steve Buscemi from the very beginning, so youre invested in the two for the rest of the movie. I think my rantings always come back to needing enough information in the beginning of the movie to care about the characters journey. I guess there were 2 issues Im wrapping my head around - more diversity in casting so were not watching different versions of the same characters, and more setup/backstory to get us invested in the story. Have any of you seen any good movies lately? And why did you think they were good?
