I watched a BBC program this morning, where the issue of lack of adequate foreign coverage of the Boko Haram problem in Nigeria was compared to the publicity given to the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks in France. The BBC journalist gave the following penetrating and illuminating answers and highlights: 1, The foreign journalists never have or receive correct or timely information from the Nigerian authorities. 2, The Nigerian authorities and the Nigerian military are never forthcoming on the issues, and want to cover up their incompetence. 3, the foreign journalists are many time, actually actively discouraged by the Nigerian authorities from knowing the truth about what is really happening or about getting to the war-zones. 4, the Nigerian authorities cannot provide or at least, promise security to the journalists. 5, sometimes, it appears that the Nigerian authorities do not themselves know what is going on, and so issue conflicting reports about places, activities, logistics, etc 6, some Nigerian officials demand bribes from the journalists before they can give information or allow them to certain areas to gather their stories. There we are. Our government and military are the problem. And we are always very quick to castigate the Western Presss for not showing enough sympathy to uour problems. And if a government is not ready to cooperate with you, what can you do? Frustrated and you teh foreign presss will give up and leave you to your own design and fate.
