I watched mainstream media today at the gym. The coverage is so - TopicsExpress

I watched mainstream media today at the gym. The coverage is so sensational and biased that I really shouldnt be so critical of people who see things so radically differently. I wish I had the time to take even a random five minute clip and point out all the many techniques and messages used to illicit a response from the viewer -- from the professionally crafted theme music (a way to borrow from the movie industry to make news broadcasts more emotionally influencing) to the graphics, choices of words, scripts, newscaster presentation, highlighting of anecdotal incidents as if they were statistically relevant, calling things trends when they are not scientifically trends, framing of the issue and debate, weasel words, the witnesses/ interviews/ pundits and experts, the blending of opinion and reporting and even the set. Background images are a great example, next time you watch a news broadcast take a look at the blurred images in the background and ask what they are of and why they are included. I have some experience in sales and a very small amount of knowledge about advertising and messaging and I could see at least a dozen examples of news manipulation in just a few minutes. Id love to hear from experts who are in the TV industry or have more knowledge about these things. Meanwhile, viewers should be cautious.
