I watched the Fifth Estate last night. Very interesting. For one thing I like Benedict Cumberbach. His performance as Julian Assange was great, and at times approached a Gary Oldman/Peter OToole-esque level of weird. For another, every time I learn the government has flat-out lied to us again, I feel like Captain Renault in Casablanca, who was Shocked..Shocked! Actually, I cannot understand why anyone my age has believed much of anything the government as told us since circa 1973. Yet even after every Gulf of Tonkin, Agent Orange, WMD (to name just a few) whopper has been exposed as bullshit, we rush to believe the NEXT one. Do we assume that they just CANT be lying to us all the time about everything, or are we simply hoping that the law of averages will catch up and something they say will turn out to be true? Your guess is as good as mine.
