I watched the documentary Censored Voices yesterday at the Sundance Film Festival and I thought the film (which I absolutely fell in love with) was beautifully crafted! It was about the recorded interviews of Israeli soldiers within 20 days after Israel’s resounding victory over the armies of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan in an event known as the Six-Day War in 1967. Not only did Israel successfully defend itself, but used the opportunity to greatly expand its borders that even reached to the religious, historic landmarks of the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. Israel’s current geography is largely defined by the Six-Day War which tripled the countrys size. Israels victory was pretty miraculous considering the odds they were going up against, to say the least. The recorded interviews were largely censored by the Israeli government until recently. The documentary shows the emotional reactions of some of the Israeli veterans today as they listen to their own recorded interviews in 1967. Since this was a total lopsided victory by Israeli forces and that Israeli soldiers were the ones being interviewed, I feared that this movie was going to show how great and glorious the war victory was for Israel, but my fear was unfounded. The interviews demonstrated the horrors and dehumanization of war with activities that included the deliberate killing of surrendering, unarmed opposing soldiers (“no mercy” orders), the deliberate rounding up and killing of male civilians, the uprooting of entire villages of its people (whose families have may have lived in their respective houses and villages for generations), and the Israeli civilian “worship” (to use their own word) of all things military after total victory was achieved in six days.
