I watched this video today that I saw from William Tarter Jrs page. It was so appropriate since 30 min later I was going to get that dreaded phone call (once again) from my sons teacher complaining about how my son doesnt sit still. My wish: I wish I could afford to send my children to a school that nurtures their talents and embraces their individuality. I just got off the phone with my sons teacher. Once again, he is in trouble. Hes drumming on the desk, hes running around the room, hes not paying attention, hes making inappropriate noises. Frankly, hes disturbing the class. Ive gotten this same phone call every week since he started Kindergarten in September. Its the same phone call that I got for Cameron throughout his days in school. Ms. Austin, Im sorry for troubling you again but can you please tell Cameron (or Izzy depending on which teacher called) to stop using the pencils to drum on the tables? Ms. Austin, Im sorry but Cameron is getting a detention today he isnt concentrating on his work. Ms. Austin I believe your son may need medication. I could go on and on.... I ask God all the time why I couldnt just have boys who were like my daughter Chanelle. She sits and does what she is told. She sits, reads, and listens attentively to the teacher. She does all her homework EARLY and is helpful whenever needed. Why cant the boys be like her? Well I got my answer. I came to the conclusion last year that I do not have cookie-cutter kids. They will never fit-in to traditional classrooms. Its just not gonna happen. And contrary to popular belief, thats ok with me. My children do not need to be honor roll students. Ive come to terms with that. If they get honor roll, great! Cameron has gotten honor roll or merit roll since grade 4. Nevertheless, its okay with me if they dont. As long as theyve done their best and respected the teachers and themselves in the process. My goal isnt to raise a academic scholars. My goals are to raise: God fearing, respectful, ambitious, and beautifully helpful and loving children. Children who become independent thinkers. If they dont score high on that test, oh well. We will study harder next time! I wont punish them if theyve tried their best. Standardized tests are not a reflection of how great my kids are and I wont allow them to think and/or feel their worth is dependent upon that.
