I went North of Bonners Ferry today to buy some pigs from a farmer. I pull up to the house and a chubby young boy about 18 comes barreling out of the house. He walks up to me with a big smile and with his small chubby hand shakes my hand. My names July! I thought I was in a movie. Nope hes the real deal. I greet him and he tells me to go down this road to the barn. I pull off the asphalt and stop suddenly because the dirt road is nothing but soft mud and ruts as high as my axle. I put it into 4 wheel and plow into the mud and its flying everywhere. The tires are spinning a lot faster than Im moving. But I get through it and I had a blast. The truck is covered. I pull up at the barn and get out. Normally for $100 bucks you get a piglet. These were 70 lbs for a $100. Whoa!, thats a good deal except how are we going to get this big, fast, dirty pig into the truck. Ya gotta help me catch it!, he says. A lot of stuff goes through my mind and one of them is Im too old for this. But, sure enough Im in a muddy pen chasing a large muddy pig. I was raised a city kid what Im I doing here? July makes a stab at one of them and it goes right through its hands and this screaming 70 lb pig with its hooves kicking up mud heads right towards me. It comes close than darts away from me and I make a half ass attempt to get it. Ya gotta grab it by the legs, he yells. After a couple more stabs at it I got it by the leg and it screams and screams. Drag it over here and lift it up to me over the fence he says. Turns out catching the pig was the easy part. Lifting this squirming, screaming, muddy, hoof kicking, pig up and out of the pen was not easy. Ive been noticing its a little harder to lift my wifes 80 lb. bag of chicken feed but this was a 70 lb. squirming fighter. July got the other two. We put the pigs in the back and I smile at myself because I got two layers of mud on my truck and some pigs in the back and Im headed down the road on a sunny spring day. My how I have changed.
