I went golfing for the first time this year. Man, the first round - TopicsExpress

I went golfing for the first time this year. Man, the first round is always a rough one. I will say, Waynesboros course is in such a shape of disrepair. You can lose balls in the fairway and the greens are awful. Bleh. I only really go there because my dad takes me and pays my fee. We did 9 holes, and I got 46 (+10). Not too bad for not swinging a club in over half a year. I usually average Bogey every hole, so I was right around average. I hope to eventually have a round under par. As I said, the first round of the year is always rough. It gave me time to evaluate how my stats deteriorated over the off season. Yes, Im one of those crazy guys that keeps stats. I like stat/number crunching. Its interesting. Anyway, heres how I evaluate myself so far... Max Drive: 210 yards I cant really hit the ball far. I can just barely break 200 if I catch it really well. Shot: Heavy Fade, Low Trajectory The ball really goes off to the right when I hit it, so I have to aim far left on every shot. I can usually compensate pretty well though. My shot also tends to be lower to the ground, which is good around trees I suppose, but sucks when I need to loft it over hazards. Accuracy/Control: C+ Ive lost some of my touch in the off season, but I find i can generally keep the ball in the fairway and can even impart some spin or controlled shots when I have too. Fine control eludes me though. Tee shots: B While I may not hit the ball far, and that heavy fade I have, I can generally get to within 10 yards of my Max Drive and keep it in the fairway. Adequate. Fairway shots: B In the fairway I can usually keep the ball in the short grass and make good, controlled contact. I duff it more often than I do tee shots, but I can usually do just as well. Hazard Shots (Rough/Deep Rough/Sand Traps/Trees/etc.): C+ Hazards are never fun to be around. I can usually hit out of the rough O.K., but sand and trees suck. Since I cant exactly hit the ball straight, I end up having to be dangerously close to trees so my ball can fade back around... But I usually end up hitting them. Once Im under them, I can usually punch it through. Sand, on the other hand, blows. I cant recover out of sand to save my life. If the trap is close enough to the green and flat, Ill putt it out, but if I have to use a wedge, Im boned. Approach Shots: C- This is where I usually fall apart. I can usually do full swings fine, but once I start having to dail the power, it bones me. I tend to over/under hit it a lot and my accuracy on approaching sucks the most. Wedges/Short Irons are probably the clubs Im weakest at. Putting: C+ I do slightly better at putting than my approach shots, but not as well as my longer clubs. If Im close enough to the green, I will putt it even if its through a hazard or some longer grass. Despite this, my putting could use a lot of work. I tend to over/under hit it a lot, again and my accuracy can be really off sometimes. It usually doesnt take me more than 3 putts a hole, but still. Thats where I think I stand at least, hopefully I can get better as the season goes, and maybe Ill finally end a round under par.
