I went out this evening in search of a red shouldered hawk. I got within 30 but the clever bird saw me first. But that put me right next to a little drama and perhaps my presence denied the hawk a meal. I heard a lot of alarm style chipping, saw the male indigo bunting. I heard others so I crouched down hoping Id get a close up when all of the sudden the little one flopped out of the sky and landed next to me. I wasnt all that near a tree and he must have flown some. I was in the open. But as you can see, he doesnt look like a qualified flier yet. His little primaries were really short. Are these two guys related?
