I went out to get bagels and lox this morning at a new york style bagel/deli/coffee restaurant. I asked the server behind the counter for 1/3 of a pound of sliced lox. She was probably between 15 and 19 years old. With the look of amazement in her eyes, she had no clue on how she was going to fill my order. After questioning four of her co-workers, she came to me and said the smallest amount of lox she could sell me was a 1/4 . I said no problem. I still want a 1/3. She disappeared to the back of the store for 3 minutes . I heard raised voices talking loudly. She came back to me and said my father is going to get it for you in just a minute He had to come out of the cooking area where he was plating omelets, eggs over easy, bacon, toast and sausage for the other servers to weigh up the lox which was clearly the duties of his daughter. I would say the public school system failed him and his daughter
