I went outside to get a wooden shim and my eye was caught by this - TopicsExpress

I went outside to get a wooden shim and my eye was caught by this bright red star in Orion (the top left one called Betelgeuse) which seemed unusually bright tonight. I wondered if it was flaring or nova-ing or something so I retrieved my telescope to look up there. Apparently it is just a really clear night for viewing things as nothing is really different, but there is a bright star just to the top left of Orion that I decided to look at, and it turned out to be a planet with three discernible moons - only thing it could be is Jupiter. Two moons were on either side about the same distance apart and one was father out and in a higher plane than the other two. At a guess the farthest one out is Callisto, with Ganymede and Europa closer in, but its hard to tell - Io is the other possibility. Been a while since Ive used my teenager years telescope.
