I went through one of these back in 1982 (I think), the epic storm that became known as Snow Jam 1982. The snow started falling the morning of January 12th, and we were all keeping an ear to the radio. It was already cold as hell, -5 (and for Atlanta, thats BITTERLY cold). Around 3PM, the mayor got on the radio (because there were no cell phones or tablets or even TVs in offices) and told everyone to send their employees home, so the whole city left downtown at the same time. The snow was falling furiously, and every flake stuck; bumper-to-bumper in a white-out, and it wasnt just snow, it was sleet that froze to the pavement on impact, leaving an invisible sheet of ice under the snow. Fortunately, my BFF Linda and I were set. We had an ounce of awesome bud and a fifth of Jack, which we shared with others. It took us more than 8 hours to get home ~ usually a 40 minute drive ~ and that last half mile was absolutely treacherous, nothing but ice. I think I still have my T-shirt that says I Survived Snow Jam 1982. It was more like a party than anything. Most people who remember it do so with great fondness.
