I went to Chicago today to serve as a volunteer poll watcher as the provisional ballots are being checked. Typically provisional ballots are not even counted unless there is a close vote in a race. This year, I was told that the race for Treasurer is the closest election in state history. So I spent the day looking over the shoulder of a Chicago Election Judge, along with a Republican Poll watcher counterpart, and noting those provisional ballots, which had problems with their registration forms. A wrong precinct, a missing signature, a wrong address when applied to what was in the database, a changed name (for those who got married/divorced, etc). Many of these ballots were the result of a new law for this past election which allowed people to do late registration, even on election day, and vote with a provisional ballot. Therefore there are far more provisional ballots then there typically are. I do not get paid for my work, but the Dems did treat their volunteers to lunch and dinner. And, I ran into Allison Schraub, a Durbin regional organizer Id worked with in the past election, trying to coordinate with the Anderson, Durbin, and Quinn. I also ran into the son of Arne Waltmire (candidate for McHenry County Board Dist. 4), he was there to volunteer as well. There will be a need for more volunteers throughout this week, and possibly beyond. Let me know if you have some interest in helping and Ill share the details.
