I went to Ft. Worth today to screen some of the undocumented kids - TopicsExpress

I went to Ft. Worth today to screen some of the undocumented kids currently housed there. I interviewed two kids with the help of my fabulous volunteer interpreter, Sammy Garcia. I also had the opportunity to interact with the larger group, which ranged in age from 4 to 12. It was absolutely heartbreaking. The kids were well cared for, but they were scared. And there were some teary eyes during discussions of missed parents, long journeys and uncertain futures. Several of the kids exhibited some emotional problems. One of the kids I interviewed showed me the bruises and scars on her arms and legs from the abuse she was taking from her caregiver in Honduras. She was 6. There are certainly political issues to tackle here, but we need to address those issues without making these kids pawns in the game. I do understand the passions on both sides of this issue, but I hope everyone can put down their swords for just a moment and remember that these are just kids. There will be plenty of time for being a Republican or a Democrat, a hard-liner or a bleeding heart. But for this moment, lets just be human beings. Whether they stay here or go home is a reasonable issue to debate. But while theyre here, lets show some compassion. Much thanks to the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association, which is doing an outstanding job of organizing and recruiting volunteer lawyers.
