I went to a conference on the subject of everglades restoration, staggering to learn it was close to 800 manatees that died in last years algae bloom alone...but I did feel a sense of hope, from those out west battling big oil and franking to the east coast fighting run off from Lake Okeechobee. ..Miami might buy a few extra decades if we restore water flow into Biscayne Bay(wake up cooperate America)...but the thing that really got me was the Miccosukee elder, who said we never signed a peace treaty with the United States. ..we are at war and you are destroying us, flooding our lands with toxic waste water. Our fish are all poisoned. ..we can no longer eat them. Our deer have all drowned because you flood our land. What I did take away from today is that the fight to save the everglades is of global importance....definitely beyond the grasp of Miamis lack of social accountability...perhaps America will wake up...but the mass extinction occurring in the everglades is globally significant...unique on earth and for ever to be lost...shame on Miami.Shame on Fort Lauderdale.
