I went to an animation screening tonight of an artist I really used to almost worship, only to see new works of his that utilized crude South Park esque humour, but even less PC. While I was working out my issues with his dichotomy of beauty and humour, I came upon this tweet and realized that I am not only lucky to still have some naïveté that was tarnished by an artists crude sense of humour, but also the safety from the harm of most of those jokes. I saw the work as tasteless rather than politically inflammatory, which is an extreme softening of the effects of artistic violence (and I was still argued with re: my view). I came home to sad news.... which again, made me angry. 2014 has been a year where the phrase BLACK LIVES MATTER has been written in caps lock as a cry for help, it is a year where it is everyones responsibility to recognize racism and partake in its defeat. anti black humour is not funny, edgy or even vaguely comparable to the usage of faggot on air. this fight is extremely unique and has a lot of serious implications that make it totally differ from the fight for gay rights. when your skin is dark you are unsafe from BIRTH and you are unsafe EVERY DAY. by giving racism any leeway you are disagreeing with the sentiment that BLACK LIVES MATTER this isnt just because Im a millenial this isnt just angst this isnt a question of perspective it is a question of BLACK LIVES some have the privilege to fight for justice while many others fight for survival
