I went to bed around 1.30 am after writing profiles for two of my characters in the new book - Twisted Wire. Stress (apart from anything to do with writing) has now evaporated from my everyday existence and I am beginning to feel the comfort and peace of mind that promotes creativity. The heat here has begun to calm down and for the last few days a breeze has wafted through the front open doors from the balcony area. On Monday I went to the Post Office and met such an interesting guy behind the counter. I made notes about him and am going to use him as a character in the book. I think this is one of the best ways to create a character. As you write about them you can actually remember them in your minds eye and the description is that much more sharp and believable ie appearance and the way they scratch their nose or the way the talk or look at you. Today I am going back to see him again and then on to the cafe where there is a limitless array of other characters waiting to be discovered. Outside the sun is just kissing the cliffs of sandstone across the bay and several fishing boats are already hard at work near a Japanese processing ship. Down below more characters of all shapes and sizes try to change shape as they jog and walk the seafront in their early morning ritual. Its time for me to make a cup of tea.
