I went to court today and I noticed that my case was the last one on the docket. Having filed it over a month ago, I was curious about its placing I asked the clerk whether the docket was a first come, first serve system but she replied that its done alphabetically. So, the court values the time of people closer to, or indeed at, the end of the alphabet less than those with A and B names? She smiled hoping that I was joking but I didnt press the issue. I resolved to sit through all 25 of the other cases. At about the 20th, the defendant in my case tapped me on the shoulder and asked for a settlement stating Its taking too long and I have to get things done today. Ill pay 50% of what youre asking. Ha, no. Im entitled to the full amount. He then became frustrated and tried to disparage my relative youth citing that he has been in the business a lot longer than I have. To which I replied, Thats true Mr. [Defendant], but I know the law and it favors me in this instance. He continued to tut while case after case was heard. He makes a second offer. No. He threatens to sue for the time he wasted here. Well, you should have paid four months ago when it was due. A third. No. I won. (Pending payment)
