I went to primary school from my class 1-7 the government provided free exercise books, pencil, eraser, pen, ink, textbooks and even as a prefect i had certain incentives. Those that went to Secondary or teachers colleges my contemporaries especially the government owned schools were given pocket money, free exercise books, textbooks, uniforms, toiletries, blankets, mattresses, pillows, food (eaten 3 times a day with varieties and assorted) and given transport money during holidays to there homes. Those who went to Universities were given allowances or popularly called then bulga, some were able to build a 3 bed room flat with what they were given by government as students. In your 4th year in the University you were given employment letter. On graduation employment is automatic. You start work after 6 months you are given a car loan of 504 Peugeot brand new. If you went through Teachers college or school of Nursing or midwifery you were given a Volkswagen (Beetle car). We had money just as we have today but..........
