I went to see/hear Sherry Turkle author of Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other (2011) speak at the New School last night. It was one of the best lectures I have seen in years. One of her most profound statements was a question. What is intimacy without privacy? Her emphasis on the need for solitude (vs. avoiding being alone), on developing skills for face-to-face confronting of difficult conversations (couples are arguing through texting), and her pointing to the consequences for democratic living was profound. “Human relationships are rich and theyre messy and theyre demanding. And we clean them up with technology. Texting, email, posting, all of these things let us present the self as we want to be. We get to edit, and that means we get to delete, and that means we get to retouch, the face, the voice, the flesh, the body -- not too little, not too much, just right.” ― Sherry Turkle
