I went to the Venice Rookery in Venice, Florida, early this morning to photograph the birds that are nesting there (which is why it is called a rookery). Several pair of Great Blue Herons were in their breeding plumage - they were building nests and displaying courtship behaviors. Their breeding plumage includes long, wispy plumes at the base of their necks. One typical courtship behavior is that the heron will stretch its neck while lifting its head and closed bill towards the vertical (stretching); another is bill dueling (their version of kissing, I suppose). As their courtship progresses, the male brings sticks to the female to add to their nest, and sometimes when he returns with a good stick, he gets lucky.
