I went to the bookstore today to buy a present. (Yes, Barnes & Noble. Yes, indie bookstores are wonderful. But all the indies are an hour from my house in neighborhoods with parking meters, so whatever.) I got to the checkout line at the same time as a girl of about twelve who had her arms at full extension, carrying a stack of books almost up to her chin. Bottommost in the stack was the current box set of The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings. The hardbacks and paperbacks above looked to be more current fantasy and science fiction novels. I told her to go ahead because her stack was far heavier than mine. I also mentioned that Id gotten the same Lord of the Rings set when I was her age and told her to enjoy them. Grinning ear-to-ear, she went up to the counter, hefting up the stack with the topmost books predictably tumbling as the clerk tried to catch them. The girls mother followed dutifully and proudly behind, holding the stack of gift cards to pay for the haul. It was great to see the next generation of fandom coming up. That girl is the reason we write.
